Tamron expands the f/2.8 large aperture zoom lens range with the new 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD telephoto zoom lens (Model A056) for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. After 17-28mm and 28-75mm, this is the third zoom lens in the lineup supporting the same f/2.8 aperture.ape Weighing 810g, it is the lightest and most compact telephoto zoom lens in its class. The new Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 tele zoom lens features the latest VXD motor (for superior autofocus performance), special lens elements, special coatings, impressive magnification ratio & minimum object distance, zoom lock switch, and more.
Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD Features
New VXD Motor for superior Autofocus
Unlike the other two f/2.8 large aperture zoom lenses in the range, the newer 70-180mm tele zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras come with Tamron’s latest VXD linear motor focus mechanism for superior autofocus performance. VXD here stands for Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive. This mechanism contributes to quieter and quicker autofocus than other models in the class.
Special Lens Elements
To deal with chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortions, etc. the new Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 equips 19 lens elements in 14 groups. The setup includes:
- Six XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) along with LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements.
- Three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) along with hybrid aspherical lens elements combined.
Regardless of the focal range, the floating system of the lens ensures optimal image sharpness and contrast.
Special Coating
Tamron’s latest 70-180mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens features BBAR-G2 and Flourine coating. BBAR-G2 is an acronym for (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2). This coating helps to minimize flare and ghosting effects. As a benefit, the images look sharp and vivid throughout the frame. Whereas the fluorine coating protects the lens from moisture and makes the wiping process easier as well.
Other Features
Just like the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046) and the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036), the newer Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 (Model A056) lens supports the same 67mm filter diameter. So there is no need to purchase additional filters.
At 180mm, this f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.6, thanks to its ability to achieve a minimum focus distance of 0.85m (33.5″) even at such a long focal length.
