After a long period, Sony has finally taken a step to introduce a full-frame ultra-wide prime lens wider than 35mm focal length for full-frame mirrorless cameras, the “Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G”. On APS-C cameras, its 35mm equivalent focal length would be 30mm. The new E-mount Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G lens features advanced aspherical elements, XD linear motors (for fast and accurate autofocus), low minimum focus distance, multiple coatings, and so much more that contributes to sharp image quality & focus, wonderful bokeh, and outstanding resolution.
Glass Elements in Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens
Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G lens incorporates two AA (advanced aspherical) elements as well as three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements. The aspherical elements keep the spherical aberration issues at a minimum. Whereas the ED glass elements protect the lens from chromatic aberrations and color fringing. Overall, the new FE 20mm F1.8 G hosts 14 lens elements in 12 groups.
XD (eXtreme Dynamic) Linear Motor
With the help of two XD (eXtreme Dynamic) Linear Motors, Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is able to perform fast autofocus operations. Despite having a large number of lens elements and groups, the motor is capable enough to drive the entire system to achieve focus in a smooth manner.
Aperture
The bright aperture of f/1.8 allows the FE 20mm F1.8 G to capture more light and also helps to produce a wonderful shallow depth of field. In low light situations, the f/1.8 wide aperture will help tremendously to achieve perfect in-focus shots without any noise. And the 9 circular aperture blades contribute to an amazing bokeh effect.
Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G Minimum Focus Distance
Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G features an outstanding minimum focus distance of just 0.63 ft (0.19m) in AF mode. But in manual mode, the minimum focusing distance goes down even further at a mere 0.59 ft (.018m).
Design
Compared to the 24mm, the new Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens is slightly smaller but supports the same 67mm filter diameter. On the outside, there is a focus hold button that is configurable via camera menu settings. In addition, you will also find a focus mode switch and an aperture ring. FE 20mm F1.8 G features a weather-sealed design which makes it resistant to moisture and dust. However, the company says that it does not guarantee 100% weather sealing protection.
Lens Coating
To avoid unwanted effects such as flaring and ghosting, Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G comes with the company’s proprietary Nano AR Coating. Moreover, the front element of the lens also uses a fluorine coating in order to repel water and grime.
