Leica just announced its latest limited edition Leitz Wetzlar M Monochrom (Typ 246) camera. This camera offers exact similar features as the standard Leica M monochrom camera except the “Leitz Wetzlar” engraving on the top. The reason behind the launch of this Leica special edition variant is the completion of 150 years that Ernst Leitz took over management of the “Optical Institue” in Wetzlar in 1869. Leica will only sell 150 Leica Leitz Wetzlar edition M Monochrom (Typ 246) cameras throughout the world.
Just like the standard M series Leica camera, this camera will shoot in black and white with a 24 MP monochrom 24 x 36mm CMOS sensor. According to Leica, shooting in black and white with the M Monochrom camera will provide 100% more details and contrast than color photography. This is because the M monochrom does not require color filters. Moreover, it does not require interpolation for the calculation of luminance values. One of the great benefits of Monochromatic shooting is that it forces the photographer to engage in a better thought process for image composition.
Leica M Monochrom supports Leica M mount lenses with a focal range from 16 to 135 mm. It is capable of shooting stills at a maximum resolution of 5976 × 3992 in DNG(raw). With the help of 2GB buffer memory, you can capture up to 30 continuous bursts. However, the burst rate is pretty slow with only 3 fps. In terms of video recording, M monochrom can shoot Full HD at a maximum frame rate of 25 fps. So, if you’re looking for higher frame rates or slow motion, this camera is not what you need since the primary focus of these cameras is to produce extremely pleasing contrast.
Leica Leitz Wetzlar M Monochrom (Typ 246) supports a live view that offers two focusing modes. One of them is a Live View “Zoom” mode whereas the other is Live View “Focus Peaking” Mode.
Live View Zoom Mode
It offers up to 10x magnification providing full control over image sharpness details or the closest focusing distance.
Live view Focus Peaking Mode
This mode provides you a live view of sharply focused edges in highlighted colored lines.
