Nikon recently announced Z5 as its latest addition to the mirrorless family, Z50, Z6, & Z7 are the older models. Nikon Z5 is a new entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera whereas the Z7 has been in the market for a while. Z7 is the most expensive model in Nikon’s Z series. Z5, being an entry-level camera, have a lower cost compared to the other ones in the lineup. Also, keep in mind that the Z7 is nearly 2 years old. Image Sensor & Processor

Given that Z5 and Z7 are full-frame cameras, both do have the same sensor dimensions. But what differs is their maximum resolutions. Nikon Z5 features a 24.3 MP sensor, while Z7 comes with a 45.7 MP sensor (effective resolutions). Note that both of the camera models come with the same EXPEED 6 image processor.

Z5 can store photos as 12 or 14-bit RAW files & JPEG. But the Z7 can also store stills in TIFF format along with 12 or 14 bit RAW & JPEG.

Image Stabilization

Both Nikon Z5 & Z7 support 5-axis built-in image stabilization that provides up to 5 stops of correction. Therefore, it allows the photographer to effectively catch the light.

Autofocus

While the lower end Z5 offers 273 focus points, Z7 comes with 493 focus points. Both models use Phase Detect AF. The Z7 triumphs this section without a doubt. The more number of focus points in Z7 allows tracking of the subject flawlessly, while the subject is on the frame.

ViewFinder & Screen

Nikon provides the same 0.5″ electronic viewfinder to both of its models. Also, the viewfinder holds 3,690,000 Dots and have 100% coverage.

Besides, a 3.2″ LCD touchscreen is provided for both the models. While the Z5 comes with a 1,040,000 dotted display, Z7 has a 2,100,100 dotted display. However, the photographer can decide whether to compromise on the budget or screen resolution.

ISO & Shutter Speed

Z5 has an ISO range from 100 – 51200. However, Z7’s ISO range is limited to 64 – 25600. In this case, Nikon Z5 outshines the older and costlier Z7.

The shutter speed for both the products ranges from 1/8000s to 30s. Z5 has a lesser continuous drive speed of 4.5 fps. Whereas, the Z7 provides us with a 9 fps continuous drive speed.

Video Recording – Z5 vs Z7

Both Nikon models feature 4K video recording. They also have a 4K time-lapse shooting mode which allows the camera to automatically record time-lapse videos at regular intervals.

Nikon Z5 & Z7 supports 8-bit 4K video recording internally. But with an external recorder, Z7 can also shoot 10-bit videos at 4K resolution. Both models are capable of recording 4K videos at 29.97, 25, and 23.976 fps.

In terms of frame rate, Nikon Z7 clearly dominates Z5. At FHD resolution, Z7 can shoot videos up to 120 fps for a buttery smooth slow motion take. In contrast, Z5 can only reach a frame rate of up to 60 fps at the same resolution.
