Leica SL2: First Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera To Shoot in 5K

Leica just introduced its new full-frame mirrorless camera that is a successor to the original Leica SL. The new Leica SL2 now features a 47 MP CMOS Sensor instead of 24 MP. It is the first full-frame mirrorless camera that is capable of shooting video in 5K resolution. There is also a new and improved electronic viewfinder(EVF) which Leica calls EyeRes Viewfinder. Unlike its predecessor, Leica SL2 boasts 5-axis in-Body Image Stabilization up to 5.5 stops.

New Image Sensor Benefits

This mirrorless camera incorporates a new Maestro III image processor that offers substantial speed improvements. Since it supports 4GB buffer memory, sports and wildlife photographers will get a huge advantage during continuous shooting. SL2 is capable of handling 20fps bursts with an electronic shutter and 10fps with mechanical. Another major benefit of the new Maestro III processor is the speedy autofocus performance.

Both photographers and videographers will appreciate the separate interface for photo and video. This will cut down the unnecessary time spent on navigating through submenus. Filmmakers can also enjoy slow motion frame rates up to 60fps in 4K or 180fps in Full HD. It supports 10-bit output externally via HDMI. Interestingly. only a handful of full-frame mirrorless cameras can shoot 4k at 60p. Panasonic S1R seems like a direct competitor of Leica SL2.

With an IP54 certification, Leica SL2 is resistant to dust and moisture. You can take this camera in harsh conditions and its weather sealing will take care of the rest. This 5k camera supports full-metal housing made of aluminum and magnesium.

SL2 now offers a new Leica Object Detection Autofocus that automatically detects if a subject is stationary or in motion. After that, it automatically switches between motion and priority focus. There is also a new EVF panel with a resolution of 5.76 MP.

Leica SL2 will also support the new Leica Fotos 2.0 App to remotely connect with smartphones and tablets such as iPad. You can also edit and share the pictures in different formats. To connect, you just need a Wifi and a Bluetooth connection and you’re good to go.

In terms of storage, Leica SL2 will offer two UHS-II compatible SD card slots. You can simultaneously store Raw files in DNG and JPEG format.
