Before we move on to a full-fledged comparison keep in mind that Canon R6 is a high-end camera, whereas the RP model is relatively cheap and an entry-level camera. We will look at the features that keep them apart and the features bring them under the same umbrella.
Sensor and Image Processor
Both models carry a full-frame CMOS sensor. However, Canon R6 comes with a better processor (Digic X) than the Canon RP (Digic 8). As a benefit, EOS R6 is able to offer better overall performance (especially in terms of video recording) than EOS RP.
Image Quality
Canon RP offers 26.2 MP resolution, which is more than Canon R6 supporting 20.1 MP resolution. Due to the higher resolution, EOS RP can deliver better results for photographers who shoots stills for large prints. Both models can store images in either 14-bit RAW or JPEG. The larger pixels in Canon R6 gives a better low light performance than the RP. Canon RP is a decent budget-oriented still photography camera, that also records 4K. It does well in photography. But overall, Canon EOS R6 is a better choice due to various reasons.
Canon EOS R6 also includes an IBIS system whereas Canon RP does not. So if you usually shoot fast action without a tripod, choosing RP might not be a good idea. The digital stabilization in Canon RP is not as good as the In-Built Image Stabilization in Canon EOS R6.
ISO and Shutter Speed
Canon R6 is superior to Canon RP in terms of ISO range. While EOS R6 supports a standard ISO range from 100 to 102400, Canon EOS RP supports only 100 – 40000. Sometimes, ISO is the only boost option left with photographers to rely on in low light conditions when they cannot tweak their shutter speed or aperture any further.
Canon EOS R6 supports a faster shutter speed than EOS RP. While RP shoots from 1/4000s to 30s, R6 goes as fast as 1/8000 s to 30s. This is another shortcoming from the Canon RP. However, this affects only those photographers who have to capture very fast actions like racing, or birds. If you need a camera for daily activities at a budget, Canon RP might suit you right.
Continuous drift speed or continuous burst is another factor that photographers look up to. Canon EOS R6 features a whopping 20 fps up to 240 RAW frames, whereas RP only features a 5 fps burst speed. And again, Canon RP falls short.
Video Capture
Both Canon R6 and RP have 4K and Full HD recording capabilities. The advanced processor in R6 makes the video recording superior to RP. Therefore, R6 can record up to 4:2:2 10-bit 4K and FHD video in H.265 at 60 fps (170 to 340 Mb/s). However, with H.264, the recording abilities drop down to 4:2:0 8-Bit UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) up to 60 fps (120 to 230 Mb/s). On the other hand, Canon RP can only record 8-bit 4K and FHD internally (MP4/H.264 UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at 23.976, 25 fps).
While recording 4K, both models induce a crop factor. Canon RP has a higher crop factor value, 1.76x, compared to the 1.5x of R6. It is crucial to compensate for variation in depth of field while recording 4K videos.
Autofocus
Just like Canon R5, EOS R6 also boasts the next generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology that delivers amazing autofocus results, thanks to the blazing fast DIGIC X image processor. It offers 1053 focus points during automatic selection. However, during manual selection, that number rises to 6072 points almost 1.5x more than the EOS-1DX Mark III.
With 4779 focus points, the phase-detection autofocus system of Canon RP does not disappoint either. But Canon EOS R6 offers far superior autofocus performance than EOS RP due to the enhancements made in the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II. It allows for the ability to enable AF Priority mode for either people or animals. Additionally, the camera is able to recognize not just the body, but the head and eyes of the subjects as well.
Viewfinder and Monitor
Canon R6 features a larger 0.5″ 3,690,000 dotted OLED viewfinder, whereas RP features a smaller 0.39″ 2,360,000 dotted OLED viewfinder. It is safe to say that Canon R6 provides a better EVF display.
Both models feature a 3″ fully articulating touchscreen. However, EOS R6’s LCD screen has a 1,620,000 dot resolution whereas RP features a 1,040,000 dot resolution.

Canon R6 supports two UHS-II compliant card slots whereas RP only supports a single slot (UHS-II compliant).
